Aug. 31, 2023: Project Censored wrote in support of MAD petition

On August 31, 2023, Project Censored, a nonprofit media-watchdog organization, published an article arguing against renewal of Fox’s FCC broadcast license.

“Although stripping an established TV station of its broadcast license may seem like an extreme measure, the Fox Corporation’s record of malfeasance and its repeated betrayal of the public trust justifies the action in this case,” wrote Steve Macek, a professor of communications and media studies at North Central College in Naperville, IL, and Mitchell Szczepanczyk, a software engineer and activist with the nonprofit Chicago Media Action, which promotes independent journalism in the public interest.

To name just one example, transcripts of Fox News coverage during the two weeks after the 2020 election reveal nearly 600 statements on the channel casting doubt on the election outcome or promoting conspiracy theories about the balloting. And the pattern of promoting falsehoods, conspiracies and doubt continues, with Fox News downplaying the significance of the Jan. 6 coup attack on the Capitol and spreading conspiracy theories about prosecutors bringing charges against Trump, Macek and Szczepanczyk wrote.
